WHAT IS HONEYSUCKLE?

Although there are 25 varieties of Honeysuckle - vines, bushy shrubs and rangy trees growing throughout the world, only one seems to attract cats (and ferrets). This particular variety is native to Eurasia and was transplanted to North America in the late 1700's. At one time, catnip was believed to be the only "treat" for cats, but now you and your cat have an alternate choice.

WHY IS HONEYSUCKLE BETTER?

In some ways Honeysuckle is similar to catnip. However, "studies have shown that a catnip reaction is an inherited tendency, with only about two-thirds of cats responding."* Although no research has been done on honeysuckle, our customer surveys indicate that over 85% of cats like to indulge in honeysuckle. Whether a cat is attracted to catnip or not has no bearing on its attraction to honeysuckle.

IS HONEYSUCKLE SAFE FOR MY CAT?

Mike Ellis with the Texas Poison Control for the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston says they've received no reports about adverse reactions. "If you look at general information, the whole Lonicera genus was included in a list of plants that at one time was temporarily considered acceptable for food."* Some cat owners are opposed to giving their cats catnip because of how it makes them act. It is reported that cats demonstrate no ill behavior when they are given Honeysuckle. The reaction will vary from cat to cat depending on its temperament. The typical responses you can expect from honeysuckle are: rubbing, rolling, drooling, tossing, batting, and overall bliss! THEY LOVE HONEYSUCKLE!!

WHAT IS IT ABOUT HONEYSUCKLE THAT MAKES CATS REACT?

"No studies have been done to determine exactly why cats react the way they do. Honeysuckle simply affects the cat's sense of smell. It gives them extreme pleasure through their olfactory nerves."*

IMPORTANT NOTE: Wet Honeysuckle has a stronger aroma and may attract a more finicky feline. Our Honeysuckle Toys can be moistened with water to enhance the sweet cat-attracting aroma of honeysuckle.

* As with any product. please supervise your pet's use of this toy. Inspect product often for rips or tears and remove toy if damaged or if parts become separated, as injury may result.
