A cat bowl is a cat bowl, right? Your cat probably spends more time with its food and water bowls than any other pet accessory in the house so should'nt your choice be based on more than just good looks? Choosing the right food and water bowls for your favorite feline can be just as important as choosing the right food.

First, we recommend that each cat have his or her own set of water and food bowls...or, at least their own food bowl. If two or more cats share a food bowl, there is a chance that the alpha cat may dominate the bowl leaving the more submissive cat without enough to eat. It's also better to give your cat(s) separate food and water bowls instead of a partitioned bowl so the contents don't accidentally mix.

Your cat will certainly appreciate your consideration of their needs when you choose their bowls. Cat's whiskers are so sensitive that they use them to detect objects in the dark by feeling the air flow against their whiskers. Because a cats whiskers are so important to their survival, they really don't like to have them soiled or smashed against the side of the bowl.

For food, we suggest a dish that is shallow, approximately 5" across and about 1 1/2" deep. For water, the bowl should be between 2" and 3" deep so your cat will have plenty of water available during the day. Here are some features to consider when shopping for cat bowls:

• A flat, weighted bottom to prevent bowls from tipping over and spilling.
• Rubber feet or rims to keep the dishes from traveling across the floor.
• Is the bowl dishwasher and microwave safe or will it require handwashing?
• A simple design that is easy to clean.
• What is the bowl made of – stainless steel, plastic, ceramic, etc.?

While plastic dishes are usually less expensive, some cats may experience an allergic reaction to the material. In some cases, cats develop feline acne, which ceases when they stop using the bowls. One explanation is that food particles can collect in tiny scratches and grow the bacteria which causes the acne. Another possibility is that it is the result of a contact allergy to the plastic. Some cats are more sensitive than others, and feline acne will not occur in all cats who use plastic bowls. We recommend using a ceramic material or weighted stainless steel bowl for your pets.

Most importantly, remember to keep your pet's dishes and eating area clean. Pick up any uneaten food and clean crumbs off the floor. Also, be diligent about washing your cat's bowls after each use just as you wash your own. Clean bowls reduce the presence of insects, odor, and potentially harmful bacteria.
