For Questions and Concerns in regards to Menu Foods Brands, Please Call: Alpo® Brand Prime Cuts In Gravy Canned Dog Food Voluntary Nationwide Recall Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities. Consumers should immediately stop feeding their dogs ALPO Prime Cuts products with the date codes listed below and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet. The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons. Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall - including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply. A complete list of affected brands and products is here. The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning this morning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall. The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity on select product codes of the brands below. This recall removes all Del Monte pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves. No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall. The affected products comprise less than one-tenth of one percent of Del Monte Pet Products' annual pet food and pet treat production. Del Monte Pet Products has proactively engaged and fully cooperated with the FDA since the start of its investigation. The adulterated ingredients were used in limited production over the last three months for those items identified by specific product codes. Del Monte Pet Products has not used wheat gluten from this manufacturing facility in China in any other pet products except those described here. Consumers should discontinue feeding the products with the Product Codes detailed here to their pets. Royal Canin recalls Prescription Diet Medi-Cal Cat Food Guelph, Ontario -- As a result of new information received from Menu Foods late yesterday, Royal Canin Canada is recalling Medi-Cal Feline Dissolution Formula canned diet because one production lot (January 08 2009) contains contaminated wheat gluten. This product is produced for Royal Canin Canada by the Menu Foods Ontario plant. Medi-Cal Feline Dissolution Formula canned diet is Royal Canin's only wheat gluten-containing canned product. This is the only Royal Canin or Medi-Cal product being recalled. Royal Canin Canada has informed all Canadian veterinary clinics that Medi-Cal Feline Dissolution Formula canned diet, prescribed exclusively through veterinary clinics, should not be fed to cats. Although only one production lot was affected, to eliminate any risks to cats, Royal Canin Canada is proactively advising veterinary clinics to remove all of the Feline Dissolution Formula canned date codes. “As animal health professionals and pet owners ourselves, we know this recall will cause concern for our customers as it has for our entire Medi-Cal/Royal Canin team,” said Dr. Brent Matthew, Veterinary Division Director. “We deeply regret that this has occurred.” Pet owners who are feeding the recalled product to their cats and have questions related to the recall should contact Royal Canin at April 17th, 2007 The recall includes all date codes of Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food. The company has not dtermined the cause of the problem, but said it is focused on one particular lot. Natural Balance Pet Foods is working with the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the incident and is encouraging consumers not to feed either pet food product to their pets. Stated on the Natural Balance Website: "We are receiving consumer complaints regarding the Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Foods. We do not know what is wrong with the food at this time, but we have heard that animals are vomiting and experiencing kidney problems. Although the problems seem to be focused on one particular lot, as a precautionary measure, we are pulling all dates of Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food from the shelves. Please discontinue feeding all Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat Food. We are working closely with the FDA. We will update this website today, as more information comes available. NO OTHER NATURAL BALANCE PRODUCTS ARE AFFECTED." *UPDATE* 04-18-2007 Official Press Release as posted on the Natural Balance Website Contact: Dogs or cats who have consumed the suspect food and show signs of kidney failure (such as loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting) should be seen by a veterinarian. We recommend our customers immediately stop feeding our recalled venison products regardless of date code and return unused product to their retailer for a full refund. The products are packaged in bags, cans and zip lock treat bags and sold in pet specialty stores and PetCo nationally. The source of the melamine appears to be a rice protein concentrate, which was recently added to the dry venison formulas. Natural Balance does not use wheat gluten, which was associated with the previous melamine contamination. We continue to work closely with the FDA in their ongoing investigation. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-829-4493 or email info@naturalblanceinc.com . Sincerely, Olivier Amice ------------- To contact Royal Canin USA, please call April 25th, 2007 Rice protein concentrate has been indicated as a possible source of melamine recently found in pet food products. As a precautionary measure, Wilbur-Ellis company, one of the suppliers of rice protein concentrate to our manufacturer, is voluntarily recalling all lots of rice protein concentrate. Drs. Foster & Smith was informed on April 25, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. that our manufacturer purchased rice protein concentrate from Wilbur-Ellis and that they were suggesting a precautionary recall. By 2:00 p.m. the same day we had issued the precautionary recall and had begun to personally contact customers, even though preliminary tests for melamine contamination were negative. Two of our products: Adult Lite Dry Dog Chicken & Brown Rice formula (Item #'s 14178, 14179, 14180, 14262, 14263) and Adult Lite Dry Chicken & Brown Rice formula Cat foods (Item #'s 12855, 12856, 13864, 13865) contain rice protein concentrate. Only the Adult Lite Dry Dog and Adult Lite Dry Cat foods contain rice protein concentrate.
As part of this precautionary recall Drs. Foster & Smith requests that customers discontinue feeding the following products purchased during the periods listed, until all FDA testing is complete:
April 26th, 2007 Chenango Valley Pet Foods is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and voluntarily recalling pet foods manufactured with a certain shipment of rice protein concentrate. The company was informed by Wilbur-Ellis that the rice protein concentrate shipped to Chenango Valley Pet Foods may be contaminated with melamine, and instructed Chenango Valley Pet Foods to recall any pet foods manufactured with the rice protein concentrate. Melamine is an industrial chemical used to make plastics and fertilizers that may lead to illness or fatalities in animals if consumed. The pet foods were sold to customers in Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, who further sold the products to their customers through catalog mail-orders or retail outlets. Only the following dry pet foods are involved in the recall: DOCTORS FOSTER & SMITH CHICKEN & BROWN RICE FORMULA ADULT LITE DOG FOOD, NET WT. 5 LBS., 12.5 LBS, and 25 LBS; Code dates: Best Used By Jan 24, 09; Best Used By Feb 8, 09; Best Used By Feb 26, 09; Best Used By April 10, 09; Best Used By April 17, 09; DOCTORS FOSTER & SMITH CHICKEN & BROWN RICE FORMULA ADULT LITE CAT FOOD, NET WT. 3 LBS. and 7 LBS.; Code date: Best Used By March 13, 09; LICK YOUR CHOPS LAMB MEAL, RICE & EGG CAT FOOD, 4 LBS. packages, Code date: Best Used By April 29, 08; Bulk CHICKEN & BROWN RICE FORMULA ADULT LITE DOG FOOD sold to one consignee (SmartPak) in a 2000 lbs. tote, Ship date: Feb 9, 2007. Pet owners who purchased the pet foods should immediately discontinue using the products and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Pet owners should consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-610-821-0608. More information can be found on the Doctor Foster and Smith Website American Nutrition, Inc. Issues Voluntary Recall The Denver office of the FDA informed American Nutrition, Inc. today that certain samples of rice protein shipped to its production facility have been contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical used to make plastics and fertilizers that may be harmful to animals if consumed. The rice protein in question was obtained from San Francisco-based Wilbur-Ellis Company. The FDA is investigating the use of rice protein, an ingredient found in a number of canned pet food products and baked pet food treats to fortify protein levels, after a portion of Wilbur-Ellis' rice protein supply was found to be contaminated with melamine. American Nutrition immediately discontinued the use of rice protein after learning of the melamine contamination. The FDA has urged American Nutrition to issue a voluntary recall of pet foods manufactured using Wilbur-Ellis rice protein. None of these products is sold under an American Nutrition brand, but are sold through other independent companies. No American Nutrition brands or other products they manufacture for other businesses are affected by this recall . One such company includes the Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd, Wilton, CT, which is recalling all canned dog foods sold under its "Blue" dog food brand, all canned cat food sold under its "Blue Spa Select" cat food brand, and all dog treats sold under its "Blue" dog food brand. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning that the FDA has confirmed the presence of melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, in rice protein concentrate used by the contract manufacturer in the production of some of these products. It should be noted the "Blue" canned dog and cat food products were not formulated or labeled to contain rice protein concentrate, and that the manufacturer, American Nutrition, Inc. added the rice protein concentrate to these products without Blue Buffalo Company's knowledge or consent. For this reason, Blue Buffalo Company is concerned that it can not have any faith in the integrity, or the accuracy of the ingredient labels of any of its products manufactured by American Nutrition. Therefore Blue Buffalo is withdrawing all products manufactured by American Nutrition, including products that American Nutrition claims do not contain rice protein. The FDA investigation into the inclusion of the rice protein by American Nutrition in Blue Buffalo's products is ongoing. Please visit the Blue Buffalo Website for more information. All products/brands subject to this recall can be found by visiting the American Nutrition, Inc Website. Pet owners who purchased these pet foods should immediately discontinue using the products and return unused portions to the place of purchase for a full refund. These products represent a small percentage of those manufactured by American Nutrition. To reiterate, no American Nutrition brands or other products manufactured for other businesses are affected by this recall. American Nutrition cares immensely about the quality of their products manufactured and the health of the pets that consume them. They want to express their deep concern over this situation. Feeding pets has been theirbusiness and passion for more than 35 years and they take that responsibility seriously. They will continue to work closely with the FDA in their ongoing investigation. For more information visit the FDA website: www.fda.gov. Consumers with additional questions can contact us by calling 1.800.257.4530 or by e:mailing us at feedback@amnutrition.com or by visiting www.americannutritioninc.com.April 27th, 2007 Because of the canned pet food recall initiated by American Nutrition Inc., Diamond Pet Foods has announced it is withdrawing a limited number of canned products manufactured by American Nutrition. This action is limited to three specific canned products: Diamond Lamb & Rice Formula for Dogs 13 oz. cans, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul Kitten Formula 5.5 oz. cans, and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul Puppy Formula 13 oz. cans. Diamond Pet Foods is taking this voluntary action after learning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed rice protein concentrate used by American Nutrition contained melamine, a substance not approved for use in food. No other Diamond brand or Chicken Soup brand canned or dry pet food formulas are affected by the American Nutrition recall. Diamond Pet Foods has not received any indication of quality or safety issues, including pet illness, with the three withdrawn products. However, because American Nutrition informed the company that these three specific products may include rice protein concentrate, Diamond Pet Foods felt this action was necessary for the protection of its customers and their pets. It should be noted that the products being withdrawn were not formulated or labeled to contain rice protein concentrate. While the FDA is investigating this, current information indicates this error is a result of a manufacturing deviation by American Nutrition. "We are voluntarily withdrawing these three canned products as a precautionary measure to protect the safety of pets and the integrity of our products," says Mike Kampeter, president of Diamond Pet Foods. "While testing has not revealed any safety issues with these products, we felt it necessary to remove them from retailer shelves as soon as we were made aware of the American Nutrition product recall." The specific products affected by the recall have "best by" dates as follows:
- Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul Puppy Formula 13 oz. cans: Aug. 21, 2008 to April 15, 2009 - Diamond Lamb & Rice Formula for Dogs 13 oz. cans: Aug. 21, 2009 to April 15, 2010 Customers with these products should stop feeding them immediately and return them to their retailer for a full refund. "Our highest priority is the health and well-being of our customers' pets," Kampeter said. "We are committed to keeping our customers informed and working with the Food and Drug Administration to thoroughly investigate the situation." For Diamond Pet Foods, American Nutrition Inc. manufactures only canned products. Diamond Pet Foods manufactures its Diamond brand and Chicken Soup brand dry pet foods in its three manufacturing plants in the United States. Based in Meta, MO, family-owned Diamond Pet Foods was founded in 1970. Cross-contamination widens pet food recall - Ontario Ontario pet food maker Menu Foods has expanded its recall of wet cat and dog food because of the chance of cross-contamination. The Mississauga-based company said in a news release on Wednesday it was now recalling products that were manufactured at one of its plants during the time when tainted ingredients were used, even if they weren't made with those ingredients. In March, Menu Foods recalled about 60 million cans and pouches of pet food that had been produced with adulterated wheat gluten. The pet food was marketed under a variety of brand names. The company said it has received a customer report and study results that indicate cross-contamination had occurred. The additional items on its recall list include products sold in Canada , the United States and Europe . An updated list of its products can be found on the company website. The contaminated gluten originated in China and was supplied to Menu Foods by ChemNutra of Las Vegas. The recall dates of those products previously recalled have been modified to include all dates during the period that ChemNutra wheat gluten was used in the applicable Menu plant, the company said. "All of these products, including the expanded dates, have previously been withdrawn from the market and should already be off the retailer shelves," the company said in a release. Menu Foods said the additional recall represents less than five per cent of the products that have already been recalled. It said it has also revised its estimate of the out-of-pocket costs for the total recall to be $40 million to $45 million. The tainted pet food has been linked to the deaths of 16 pets, mostly cats. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said tests show that the food was contaminated with melamine, a chemical used in the making of plastics. Several other pet food companies also have voluntarily withdrawn their products from the market to prevent further pet deaths. Class Action Lawsuit has been filed. Berding & Weil, LLP has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of all pet owners nationwide who purchased the pet food that was manufactured by Menu Foods, Inc. and sold under various brand names, including IAMS, and whose pets have become ill or died as a result of eating such food. The FDA is asking those with sick or dead pets to call FDA state complaint coordinators. A list of contacts for such coordinators is available at http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html You may also visit the FDA Website for more ![]() We at the Cat Connection want to assure our customers that none of the products or foods we carry were affected by the recent pet food recall.
